I've been reading a lot lately about the health benefits of eating natural grass fed beef versus beef from a feedlot or CAFO, which is where most grocery store beef comes from. I am no great authority on nutrition, but it seems to me that some things are pretty much a matter of common sense. When you eat a food that was once a live animal, beef, chicken, pork, turkey - whatever - you are eating in part what that animal ate. If the animal was fed an unhealthy, artificial diet of genetically modified corn, candy, starch residue or, even worse chicken manure, and pumped full of antibiotics, hormones etc. at least some of that is what you are eating in your meat.

Now don't get me wrong, I love chicken manure - in my vegetable garden! I don't know about you, but I don't want to find garbage and certainly not manure, on my plate. Some of the things cattle are fed in feedlots makes me cringe; not to mention the hormones, steroids and antibiotics. And the feedlot conditions for the cattle - don't even get me started. I much prefer knowing that the meat I am eating and feeding my family is as natural and healthy, and delicious as possible. Those are just some of the reasons we eat and raise all natural grass fed beef.
If the animal you are eating, in this case beef, ate an all natural diet of grass without grains - genetically modified or any other kind, no candy or starch residue, no chicken manure, and was never given hormones or antibiotics then those won't show up in your meat. I'll let the experts give you all the research and statistics and details but honestly it seems pretty simple to me. I am reminded of a saying regarding computers and I think it applies here "garbage in, garbage out." If you put garbage into an animal, and I don't know what else you could call feeding cattle candy and potato chip residue, much less chicken manure, how can you expect to get anything healthy out?
And the good thing is growing grass fed beef is the natural, healthy way to raise cattle. Doesn't it just make sense? You allow cattle to graze freely on the food they were intended to eat - grass - in the fresh air with sunshine and plenty of pure mountain water to drink. You don't cram them together standing in their own manure or fill them full of stuff that is not good for them. And guess what? The cattle are healthy and happy and the beef is nutritious and delicious. This method of raising beef is certainly not new or revolutionary. It is actually a very old tried and true method; been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. Back to the future if you will. It is the way small farmers raised their cattle until the World War II era when everything, including agriculture, became industrialized, faster and super sized. It still amazes me that the beef industry today has strayed so very far away from this natural plan. Sometimes I wonder about our society's so-called "progress." As for us, we will stick to the natural way; it is what works best anyway. Natural, healthy, delicious. Simple.
