Why Grass Fed
Why Would You Eat Anything Else?
Grass is the food nature intended for cattle; it is healthy for them and they in turn are healthy for you. Finishing cattle on grass takes longer than a feedlot (which is where supermarket beef comes from), but it is better for the animal, better for you and better for the enrivonment.
Our 100% grass fed, grass finished beef is more than delicious. It's a healthy alternative to conventional, grain fed "supermarket" beef. According to a Clemson University Study there are at least ten Health Advantages of Grass-Fed Beef:
- Lower in total fat
- Higher in beta-carotene
- Higher in Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol).
- Higher in B vitamins and riboflavin.
- Higher in the minerals calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
- Higher in total Omega-3s.
- Healthier ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats.
- Higher in CLA (potent cancer fighting qualities).
- Higher in Vaccenic Acid (which is converted by the body to CLA).
- Lower in saturate fats linked with heart disease.
No hormones, steroids, antibiotics or grains, ever.
Grass is the food nature intended for cattle - not grain. Grain is difficult for ruminants to digest and can literally make the animals sick; thus the use of antibiotics in feedlots or CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation).
Our Lowline Angus cattle are raised and finished on our ranch, where they graze rotationally on grass in open pastures in the fresh air and sunshine. They drink our pure, clean mountain water from the glaciers above us. We are committed to a natural and compassionate approach to sustainable ranching.
We do not use antibiotics, hormones, steroids or grains on our animals. Humane treatment results in low stress levels and better health, eliminating any need for antibiotics or other drugs.
Industrial grain-based CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation) or feedlot operations pollute the environment, expose cattle to inhumane conditions, require intensive consumption of fossil fuels and produce much higher levels of environmental pollutants. Feeding cows a diet of grazed grass requires much less fossil fuel and impacts the environment in a more positive manner. Sustainable ranching and management intensive grazing, practiced on our ranch, helps keep cattle, air, land, and water healthy and can actually lower our carbon footprint.
Why Our Beef?
Our Lowline Angus cattle come directly from our ranch to you. There is no middleman. We raise the cattle, pack the boxes, make the deliveries and run the store. That is how we control the quality of every piece of grass fed beef that leaves our ranch. While this may seem unusual, it is how ranching used to be before industrialized agriculture took over and the small family farmer was a thing of the past.
Any breed of cattle can be finished on grass; they just don't all do it well or taste good. You've may have heard the comment about grass fed beef having a "gamey" taste or being "tough as an old shoe." Unfortunately both those statements can be true, not all grass fed beef is created equal. Without the right breed of cattle and plenty of good grass and fresh water for them, the meat is not going to be the best. Our Lowline Angus heritage beef has been bred for generations to finish well on grass and taste delicious. Our breeding stock are registered and DNA tested to the original Lowline Angus herd to ensure quality and consistency. Lowlines mature early on nothing but grass, allowing us to harvest when the animal is young and the meat is tender and full of natural flavor. It is the best beef we've ever eaten.
